About the book

Thirty years at sea, and a lifetime of making the best of it.

I have worked hard all my life, and I try to always keep a positive attitude and make the best of any situation. I believe that even at the worst of times, we can see a positive outcome from it.

I have always treated my junior sailors as my kids, always looked out for their best interests, and always encouraged them to learn as much as possible and keep striving and driving to be their best.

Eric Jacobs smiling on the flight deck of a ship at sea

I grew up quickly. We weren't poor, but with four boys and one girl at home, and Dad the only real wage earner, things were sparse and hand-me-downs were the norm.

From about the age of seven I worked on a neighbor's farm — picking vegetables, going to the farmers' market, and helping run the roadside vegetable stand.

Later came thirty years in the United States Navy and travels around the world. This book is the story of that adventure.
